Beauitful Bridges

Pedestrian Bridge - Texas

This beautiful arched bridge in Lake Austin was built by Miro Rivera Architects and is
used to connect the client's main house to the smaller guest house on the other side of the
pond. To make the bridge seem as natural as possible within its surroundings they made the
decking and reed-like hand rails imperfect but still structurally sound.

Kintaikyo, Iwakuni, Japan

The original Kintai Bridge was built in 1673 but collapsed due to flooding. The rebuilt bridge survived for more than 200 years until a typhoon destroyed it in 1950. The bridge that stands now over the Nishiki River has five wooden arches displaying an incredible amount of detail and craftmanship. Interesting fact: no nails or bolts have been used to build the arches, only clamps and wires.

Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge, Brasilia, Brazil

The JK Bridge in Brasilia is a lesson in elegant bridge design. The three huge diagonal arches over the deck of the bridge give the structure an amazing visual fluidity (yeah, but was the designer slightly inebriated when he designed this structure?).

Rolling Bridge, London, UK

Thomas Heatherwick's award-winning rolling bridge is an ingenious addition to the grand union canal system in London and is unique. Unlike regular movable canal bridges, the rolling bridge curls up to form an octagon by way of hydraulic jacks to let ships pass.
Beipanjiang River Railroad Bridge, Guizhou, China

Beipanjiang River Railroad Bridge in Guizhou is an enormous railway bridge that was built as part of the 'Guizhou-Shuibai Railway Project'. Connecting two mountains over a deep ravine, at its highest point the bridge's deck sits 918 ft above the ground. Parenthetically the bridge connects two of the country's poorest areas.

Henderson Waves, Southern Ridges, Singapore

'Henderson Waves' is Singapore's highest pedestrian bridge and is at the 'Southern Ridges,' a beautiful 9 km (six miles) stretch of gardens and parks. The deck of the bridge is made from thousands of Balau wood slats, perfectly cut and arranged, and along the length of the deck a snaking, undulating shell forms sheltered seating areas on every upward curve.

Pont Gustave Flaubert, Rouen, France

This incredible vertical lift bridge is in Rouen, France, whose spans weigh 1,200 tons each but can be hoisted 180 ft vertically in an impressive 12 minutes. The angular lift structures at the top of each tower weigh 450 tons each. The huge vertical lift allows even the largest cruise liners to sail through.

H egigio Gorge Pipeline Bridge, Southern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea

This bridge supports two pipelines - one gas, the other oil - across the extremely deep gap in Papua New Guinea. If this were to be officially recognized as a vehicular or pedestrian bridge it would rocket to the top of the 'world's highest bridge-span' with the pipelines at an impressive height of 1,290 ft above the bottom of the gorge. By comparison, the current highest bridge span title belongs to the Royal Gorge Bridge in Colorado, hanging a mere 1,053 ft above ground level

Experimenting with geotagging a post on blogger.

I'm experimenting with geotagging a blogger post. I REALLY LIKE this feature. I hope one day to convert all of the businesses on Collier County Business Directory but it'll take a lot of work. Part of the problem is that Yahoo and Google, for two examples, use slightly different address to coordinates systems. Once I geotagged about 10,000 businesses (about a year ago) only to find out that Google saw them differently, and I couldn't use that work. Wah... :-( But it'll get there. And Naples will never be the same when it works!

Google Friend Connect is now in a limited testing phase - and naplesplus is a part of it!

Google Friend Connect, the up and coming social networking service that will connect various and sundry websites together with a common social networking platform, is now White Listing a number of websites to be a part of their continuing testing phase.

My little Naples, FL website, http://free.naplesplus.us

is now a part of the Google Friend Connect testing phase. Come on by and if you look to the left panel of the site, about half way down, you'll see a Google Friend Connect thing. (it says "Google members"). From there, you can join Google Friend Connect, use your Plaxo or Orkut or Google profiles, and set up a new type of presence on the Internet, one that will eventually link everything together.

You'll be able to find your friends, see what websites they're into, hook together in a way never possible before. This is just the beginning stages of the process - the first teetering steps towards a very large and very necessary evolution in social networking -- meta social networking that spans across multiple websites. MyBlogLog has come close to this goal, but hasn't quite reached it yet. Google will do it right. They may be the 800-lb Gorilla, but that's why it's good to be on their side :-)

11 Tips for Evacuation from your home! (hurricane, flood, fire, etc) - from FlyLady

Dear Friends,

Here it is that time of year again when we are faced with the threat
of Evacuation from our homes. We never know when we this could happen
because of fire, train wreck, floods or hurricanes. It is up to us to
be prepared!

1. PEOPLE: Have a plan for getting out of the house and make sure
everyone knows it. Have an emergency bag of food and water for your
family. Include wholesome snacks and treats for the children: dried
fruit, nuts, peanut butter, crackers and granola bars.

2. PETS: Keep pet carriers and leashes readily available to lead pets
to safety. Also take pet food with you.

3. PICTURES: Keep negatives or CDs of pictures in a lock box or at a
family member's home. Have picture albums in one place ready to grab
and go at a moments notice.

4. PAPERS: Have all your important papers in a lock box at a bank and
only keep copies at the house. This keeps you from panicking. If you
have them at home then put them in a folder that you can easily grab
if you have to move fast. Color code it so you can find it!

5. PRESCRIPTIONS: Take your medications with you. Don't forget the
ones that have to be refrigerated like insulin. Have small ice chest
and cold packs readily accessible to pack and go. If you have babies;
remember their formula or medications.

6. PURSES and PETRO: This is where you keep your identification,
credit cards and cash. Keep a stash of cash for emergencies and grab
it. You may not be able to use an ATM in the event of a power outage.
Make sure your car always has a half a tank of gas.

7. PROPER CLOTHES and COMFORT ITEMS: According to the weather
conditions; gather up a change of clothes along with outer clothing:
coats, rain gear, boots, gloves and hats. If you have babies remember
diapers. Remember to grab your children's favorite blanket, stuffed
animal or toy. A game or a deck of cards could keep them occupied and
calm too.

8. PLANNER/CALENDAR/CONTROL JOURNAL: These documents have all the
information you will need from phone numbers, insurance numbers and
important dates. They are small and filled with things you don't have
to try to remember.

9. PERSONAL PROTECTION: Many of us still have that time of the month.
Be sure and grab a box of your preferred protection. It may be hard to
find if you have been evacuated. Stress can cause our bodies to do
strange things too. So be prepared. Take medication for cramps too.

10. PHONES, RADIOS, FUEL FOR THE CAR: Many of us have cell phones now.
Always keep them charged up and have a charger in the car or an extra
battery. They may not work in the event of power outages, but then
they might. Know which local radio station has emergency bulletins.
Keep your battery powered radio tuned to that local station and have
plenty of batteries for it. Also keep a old type regular phone that
does not operate with electricity. GAS PUMPS don't work without power
either. You can't leave if your car is on empty. So keep your car fuel
tank topped off when it hits a half of tank. This way you will have
gas to drive at least a couple of hours. Evacuation routes are usually
bumper to bumper traffic. Having a tank filled will keep you less
stressed.

11. PATIENCE: This is one of the most important things to pack. Keep
it inside of you so that you have a clear calm head. Having your P's
to Preparedness list guiding you will keep you patient. In the event
of an evacuation there will be lots of displaced people. Being patient
will make things less stressful. Your children need to see you calm
and collected. This will help keep them calm too.

We can FLY in the face of Danger and Emergency if we are prepared.
Don't wait till you are being asked to evacuate. Everyone thinks that
it could not happen to them. Well it could and it is up to you to make
sure you are prepared.

Don't wait! DO IT NOW!!

1) Find a section you want to be able to post to. You can only choose one section.
2) Note its number. You can find out the number easily, as it will be:

The ### - that is the number you want.

3) Edit http://yourwebsite.com/services/describe.php and change the BlogID
in the line for MetaWeblog to that ### number.

Example: If your section was 107 (http://yoursite.com/sections/view.php/107)
Instead of blogID="" it'll say "blogID="107"

4) Now you can set up your YACS website to work with posterous.com!

A lady was telling the other day that she saw a man driving down the interstate, and a dog was hanging on to the tail gate for dear life. She said if he hadn't been going so fast in the other direction she would have tried to stop him.

A few weeks later her son see's this truck at the bass pro shop! It's a taxidermist! THIS IS REALLY IN DAPHNE ALABAMA!
